How long does it take to get an Indiana Nursing License?

Permanent License:

Approximately 4-6 weeks upon receipt of all required materials

Temporary License

Approximately 2 weeks upon receipt of all required materials

IN License Renewal

  • Renewal cadence: October 31st of every odd year, for both RN and LPN licenses. A license that has been expired for less than 18 months may be renewed online.
  • Renewal fee: $50.00, $25.00 for renewal of compact RN or LPN license. A late fee of an additional $50.00 will be charged if you do not renew by the renewal date. 
  • Required contact hours: There are no CEU requirements for the renewal of LPN or RN licenses in Indiana.
  • If your license has been expired for more than 3 years, you will need to file for reinstatement, not renewal. You can do this here. 

Important Things to Know about Indiana Nurse Licenses

  • Request for "Official documents" means the document must be the original document or a notarized copy provided directly from another state board of nursing or the awarding entity. 
  • All official documents to the Board's Address from a direct source should be sent to the following address either by mail:

    Indianapolis, IN 46204
  • If your original state of licensure has an official copy of your nursing school transcripts and/or high school diploma or equivalent, you may request that state forward a certified copy to this office.
  • All unofficial documents can be uploaded to the online application/license or emailed to pla2@pla.in.gov.
  • Endorsement applications are considered abandoned if they are not completed within one year.

IN Licensure by Endorsement

Process

Permanent License

  1. Submit an application online and pay the fee. The process is the same for RNs and LPNs. 
  2. Complete the fingerprinting and criminal background check. You must complete this process for every new application submitted to the Indiana Board of Nursing. Find more information here. Use the following service codes for your background check:

  1. If you answer "yes" to any questions on the application, explain fully in a statement that includes all related details. Please include the violation, location, date, cause number, and disposition, and submit copies of court documents for each instance to support the statement where applicable. If malpractice, provide the name(s) of the plaintiff(s). You can upload this to your account or email this to the Board. 
  2. Enclose any documentation of any legal name change if your name differs from that on any of your documents.
  3. Verify your licensure through Nursys.  Official verification from all US States, Territories, and countries where you hold or have held a license in a health profession, regardless of its current status, must be submitted. Jurisdictions not using the NURSYS program will need to send license verification directly to the Board’s Address via mail or email.
  4. The nursing program information must be entered on the application. If your State of original licensure does not verify education for their applicants for other state boards of nursing, you will need to provide an official transcript from a State accredited program in nursing.
  5. If you are not a US citizen, please provide documentation from USCIS that shows proof of your eligibility to work in the United States or qualified alien status.

Temporary License

  1. If you wish to be issued a temporary permit, please indicate this on your application.
  2. You may apply for a temporary permit while waiting for your LPN or RN endorsement application to go through if you have:
  • At least one(1) active license in another state or territory of the United States and
  • A pending application for licensure by Endorsement with the Indiana Nursing Board.
  1. The temporary license is valid for 90 days.
  2. Answering “yes” to any of the questions on page 2 will preclude you from receiving a temporary license.
