How long does it take to get an Idaho Nursing License?

Permanent License

Approximately 5 business days upon receipt of all required materials

Temporary License

Same day upon receipt of all required materials when the only outstanding item is the background check


ID License Renewal

  • Renewal cadence: The RN license renewal period is May 1st through August 31st in odd-numbered years. The LPN license renewal period is May 1st through August 31st in even-numbered years. The renewal application is available in the Nurse Portal starting May 1st. If your license has not been renewed by August 31, your license will lapse, and you will be unable to work until your license has been reinstated.
  • Renewal fee: $90
  • Required contact hours: 2 learning activities within the Practice, Education, or Professional Engagement sections. More information can be found here.

Important Things to Know about Idaho Nurse Licenses

  • Applications are valid for one year after initial submission.
  • You can monitor the progress of your application through the nurse portal.

  • The Board of Nursing has gone paperless and thus relies on e-mail for communication. Keep your email up to date in the Nurse Portal and sign up for e-Notify via Nursys
  • The board may request additional information if more verification is needed. 
  • While Idaho was previously a walk-through state, no information on a walk-through license is currently available on from the Idaho Board of Nursing. 


ID Licensure by Endorsement

Process

Permanent License

  1. Apply through the nurse portal on the BON website and pay the fee. The process is the same for RNs LPNs.and  
  2. Request verification of licensure via Nursys from a state where you hold an active license. You must list all states where you hold active or inactive licenses but only one verification is required. If these states do not participate in Nursys, you will need to contact that state's BON and request verification be sent to the Idaho BON via this document.
  3. Provide a satisfactory nursing reference on this form from the three-year period immediately preceding the application,
  4. Provide a declaration of your primary state of residence.
  5. Provide a background check with fingerprints.
  • Law Enforcement or fingerprinting stations may use LiveScan to scan fingerprints, but the images must be printed onto a card (any standard fingerprint card will suffice) and mailed to us.

Temporary License

  1. A temporary license may be issued to an applicant for licensure by endorsement on proof of current licensure in good standing in another jurisdiction or satisfactory evidence of employment within the three years immediately preceding application.
  2. Temporary licenses are valid until the next renewal period.
  3. Log into the Nurse Portal and either apply within your application or apply for a temporary application (do not select a Short-term temporary application as this is conditional).
  4. To extend your temporary license, contact the board of nursing at HP-Licensing@dopl.idaho.gov
