Whether you're a seasoned therapist looking for a change of scenery or a recent graduate eager to explore different healthcare settings, travel allied careers offer unique opportunities to expand your horizons while making a meaningful impact on patients' lives. We partnered with Chelsea Gallagher, MOT & Transcend Travel Therapy Coach for an informational event on the ins and outs of allied travel therapy. Be sure to check out the replay for all the details or read below for the highlights.

Mitigating Fear & Worry with a Travel Allied Career

Embarking on a travel allied career can be both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. Common concerns may include worries about adjusting to new environments, loneliness on the road, or uncertainty about job stability. Fear not! Preparation is the most important piece of advice Chelsea shares. In traveling, however, the unexpected is bound to happen, so maintain an open mindset and understand that it’s all a part of the experience on your new adventure. By addressing these concerns head-on and equipping yourself with the right mindset and resources, you can overcome any obstacle that comes your way.

To alleviate anxiety, start by embracing the unknown as an opportunity for growth rather than a source of fear. Prepare yourself mentally by researching your destination, connecting with fellow travelers, and setting realistic expectations. There are tons of Facebook groups filled with travelers waiting to share their experiences, pitfalls, and recommendations. Trusted Health also offers The Trusted Circle Community to connect with fellow healthcare professionals wherever you are along the journey. Remember that feeling nervous is normal, but it's what you do with that fear that matters most. Use it as fuel to propel yourself forward and seize every opportunity that comes your way.

Certifications, Licensures, & State Requirements for Allied Pros

Before embarking on your travel allied journey, it's essential to ensure that you have the necessary certifications, licenses, and credentials to practice in your desired field. Each state has its own set of requirements, so be sure to familiarize yourself with the regulations specific to your destination.

Chelsea suggests applying and obtaining licensure in a few different states you plan to work in ahead of time as this eases your licensure verification process as well as increases job opportunities and application preparation. Staying organized is key to maintaining active licensure, so make sure to keep track of your licensure expiration dates and renewal periods.

Common certifications for allied healthcare professionals may include:

  • CPR certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Specialty-specific credentials such as the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)

Additionally, you'll need to identify a minimum of two references who can speak to your professionalism and skillset.

Navigating the licensing process can seem daunting, but don't let it deter you from pursuing your travel allied dreams. Many agencies offer support, reimbursement, and guidance to help you obtain the necessary credentials efficiently, so you can focus on what you do best – providing exceptional care to your patients.

Choosing a Travel Allied Healthcare Professional Agency

One of the most critical decisions you'll make as a travel allied professional is selecting the right agency to partner with. Your agency will serve as your advocate, helping you find rewarding assignments, navigate logistical challenges, and provide support throughout your journey.

Understanding your personal needs from an agency is important prior to building any new relationships as you should base your determinants of a good fit with what feels right for you. When choosing an agency, consider factors such as reputation, benefits packages, job placement opportunities, and personalized support.

Do your research, read reviews, and don't be afraid to ask questions. Peer recommendations and word of mouth referrals are some of the best ways to find top agencies and provide comfort in decision making. A reputable agency will be transparent about their processes, policies, and expectations, ensuring that you feel confident and informed every step of the way.

How to Gain Confidence and Independence While Adventuring as an Allied Traveler

As you embark on your travel allied journey, you'll have the opportunity to develop invaluable skills, both personally and professionally. Embrace the challenges that come with adapting to new environments, cultures, and patient populations – they will only make you stronger.

A few tips Chelsea suggested:

  • Continue good habits with fitness and healthy eating
  • Create a bucket list for outside of your work activities
  • Say yes to new adventures and things outside your comfort zone
  • Explore by trying new things, hobbies, and friendships

To build confidence and independence, immerse yourself fully in each assignment, seeking out opportunities for growth and learning. Take initiative, ask questions, and don't be afraid to do something for the first time. Remember loneliness is normal but resilience is key – your greatest days are on the other side of your fear!
